On Wednesday, March 16, the Connecticut General Assembly chose not to vote on the final settlement agreement for Sheff v. O’Neill, the state’s landmark school desegregation case. The legislature’s non-vote effectively cleared the agreement for approval by the court system.
CCA Executive Director Martha Stone, who has served as co-counsel for the Sheff plaintiffs since the lawsuit was originally filed in 1989, lauded the approval of the settlement agreement.
“I am heartened that the legislature’s been on the same page with the plaintiffs and the state,” said Attorney Stone. “As [Connecticut] Attorney General [William] Tong said, this Sheff case is one of the most important civil rights cases in Connecticut.”
