Parents, Educators and Advocates to Hold Briefing on CSDE and Title IX Guidance on Supporting Transgender and Gender-Expansive Students

LGBTQ and education organizations, advocates, and allies will hold a press briefing to illuminate two new sources of guidance for Connecticut schools on the treatment of transgender and gender-diverse students:

  • The Connecticut State Department of Education’s (CSDE) revised guideline on Civil Rights Projections and Supports for Transgender or Gender Diverse Students, issued in January 2024; and
  • The U.S. Department of Education’s final rule affirming that Title IX prohibits discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, transgender status, and other sex-based characteristics and stereotypes, issued on April 24, 2024.

At the briefing, the groups will release a set of best practices that will be shared with all Connecticut school districts. The best practices are accompanied by examples of situations covered by the guidance, and a Q & A to help districts understand how to ensure all students in their schools are treated fairly and have equal access to a supportive educational environment.

School districts have a deadline of August 1, 2024, to comply with the updated federal regulations.
